About AXA & Net Zero

AXA Switzerland aims to achieve net zero emissions in its operations by 2025. This means that the company's remaining carbon emissions will be removed from the atmosphere and saved in the long-term through climate protection projects. AXA perceives a sustainable future as part of its responsibility and therefore does not only transform its core business but also creates sustainable value for its customers by identifying suitable products and services for SME clients. AXA wants to make a sustainable contribution to the future that goes far beyond its core business.

Challenge

AXA is a leader in the insurance industry on the topic of sustainability. When it comes to carbon emissions reductions focusing on Scope 1 & 2 is needed to create a meaningful impact. In Switzerland, they sought ways to ease the path toward climate action among their main group of clients: SMEs. The challenge was that “sustainability” is not broadly understood and is far from the reality of most SMEs. The key challenge was to find an approach to bring about greater awareness of the topic simply and quickly.

Solutions

AXA turned to Pelt8 to collaborate on creating a “CO2-Quickcalculator”. The goal was to develop an assessment in the form of a questionnaire which could be answered in under 5 minutes, have less than 20 questions and provide high-level insights into a company’s carbon footprint.

The project was led by the Open Innovation team and lasted about 1.5 months when Pelt8 created the methodology and data model to be able to have an assessment across all major industries and all cantons. Once the groundwork was completed and after positive reviews internal and external sustainability experts, the API was handed over and integrated into the SME section on their website.

Completed client goals

  1. Create the first Quick CO2 Quick Calculator for SMEs in Switzerland

  2. Define an understandable way to present the results in a relatable manner

  3. Create traction around CO2 reduction & AXA’s green services

“Innovation is embedded in AXAs strategy and as an open innovation team our goal is to find new ways of solving our clients’ problems. For us at AXA, working with startups is the secret sauce to running innovation. We had a good feeling with our colleagues from Pelt8 from the very first moment. On a human level it worked immediately and also later in the project I noticed that Gwen and Julian always reacted immediately and professionally. We are absolutely thrilled with the result and will continue to develop the QuickCalculator together with Pelt8. Personally, I continue to follow the path of Pelt8 and am thrilled with what they have achieved so far. It was a great pleasure to work with them!”
